How to Calculate Fractions

A fraction represents a part of a whole number. It has two parts: the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom). Our fraction calculator handles all four arithmetic operations and automatically simplifies the result to its lowest terms.

Fraction Operation Formulas

Addition: a/b + c/d = (aƗd + bƗc) / (bƗd) → then simplify
Subtraction: a/b āˆ’ c/d = (aƗd āˆ’ bƗc) / (bƗd) → then simplify
Multiplication: a/b Ɨ c/d = (aƗc) / (bƗd) → then simplify
Division: a/b Ć· c/d = (aƗd) / (bƗc) → then simplify

FAQ – Fraction Calculator

How do you add fractions with different denominators? ā–¼
Find the LCD (Least Common Denominator), convert both fractions to have the same denominator, then add the numerators. Our calculator does this automatically and shows all steps.
What does simplifying a fraction mean? ā–¼
Simplifying means dividing both numerator and denominator by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) until no common factor remains. Example: 4/8 simplifies to 1/2.
How do you multiply fractions? ā–¼
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. Then simplify. Example: 2/3 Ɨ 3/4 = (2Ɨ3)/(3Ɨ4) = 6/12 = 1/2.
